Drift Strategy

Welcome to my blog. For my first drift I decided that I would try the algorithmic strategy of turning right, then left, then right, then left, and so on. I tried my best to keep with this method throughout the walk, and only a few times I turned the same direction twice in a row. This ended up working to my benefit because it was really cold and windy, and I managed to turn myself back towards my home. I didn't feel like I was heading the right direction while I was out on my walk, but at some point I must have subconsciously realized that I should start heading back to where I came from. Chimes

These sounds were probably my highlight from recording. I tried to avoid having wind interfere, so I shielded the mics while recording the chimes. After about 4 hours of walking around freezing, this was exactly what I wanted to hear, the wind creating its own song. The ambiguity of this recording was that I wanted to pick up the chimes exclusively because I was exhausted of all the engine roars and typical city noises I had been encountering, but by the end of the clip I had much, much more going on than what I had intended that I realized there was an ensemble building up, created by the wind. This is life in a big city, these are the sounds that are omnipresent. Play Sound

Buzz

This recording was one of the things where you just happen to be in the right place at the right time. I was hearing this buzzing noise that kept getting increasingly louder as I was getting closer to an apartment building. As I was recording it, sirens started and it turned this into a really interesting recording. The only deliberate sound was the buzzing noise, but I was really happy when I listened to this recording after my drift. Play Sound

Shoveling

This recording may not be the most unique action to capture, but I really like the way that she was shoveling. She was almost getting frantic in her attempts to clear her driveway. It made me feel the ice that she is trying to get rid of, and gives a sense of how it felt outside. Play Sound

Beep Beep BANG

This recording is of a truck that was backing into a factory. It turned out to be one of my favorites because its one that actually scared me. While I was focusing on the volume control on the mini-disc recorder for the beeps and the engine noises all of a sudden there was a loud bang from inside the factory and it completely caught me off guard. The more I listened to it, the more I liked the placement of the beeps and the bangs and the other noises, so I thought I would include this in my drift. Play Sound

A Flag

This is my first experiment with the recorder. The gain was pushing as close to peaking as I could manage without doing so. I wanted to capture as much sound as I could and also get an object to be the foreground that was three stories above me. When I listened to it in playback I thought that it was one of the more interesting recordings I had. Play Sound
